What Happens to My Coverage If a Driver Under 25 Causes an Accident?
Coverage still applies, but expect higher premiums going forward. Drivers under 25 are flagged as a statistical risk factor, not excluded from coverage. The accident is covered under your policy's liability and physical damage provisions the same as any other driver, but it will affect renewal pricing.
Why the Calculator Flags Drivers Under 25 As a Risk Factor
The Commercial Auto Insurance hub's premium calculator lists drivers under 25 as a risk factor without explaining why. Insurers rate younger drivers higher because of statistically higher accident frequency tied to less driving experience, which raises the expected cost of claims across the entire fleet, not just for that one driver.
Does an Unnamed Young Driver Still Count as 'Insured'?
Often yes. IRMI's omnibus clause extends "insured" status to anyone using a covered vehicle with the owner's permission, even if they aren't specifically named on the policy. That means a young employee who was authorized to drive a restaurant vehicle, even informally, may still be covered under the policy's omnibus provision at the time of the accident. This is not a substitute for properly listing regular drivers, but it does mean coverage isn't automatically void just because a driver wasn't on the declarations page.
What Statutory Minimum Liability Limits Still Apply
Every driver operating a vehicle on public roads, regardless of age, must meet the state's minimum liability requirements. California's Vehicle Code Section 16056 sets the statutory floor for financial responsibility that any driver, young or experienced, must carry. A driver's age doesn't lower or raise this legal minimum; it only affects what the insurer charges to provide coverage above it.
How to Keep Coverage Intact When Hiring Younger Drivers
To avoid coverage surprises with younger delivery staff:
- List all regular drivers on the policy, including those under 25, rather than relying on the omnibus clause as a substitute
- Ask about telematics or driver safety programs, which several carriers use to offset the age-related premium increase
- Set a minimum driving experience requirement, such as one full year licensed, for anyone assigned to delivery routes
